The playoffs are now set to kickoff for the Open Division! Here's a look at the teams that made it and the quarterfinal matchups.

The top eight teams in Arizona are now officially known as the AIA has announced the bracket for the Open Division. Here are the teams chasing Arizona's top prize.

PHOENIX — The regular season has now officially come to a close on Friday Night Fever, Arizona's No. 1 and longest-running high school football show, and we now know the teams that will compete for the state's top prize in high school football, the Open Division state championship.  

On Saturday, the Arizona Interscholastic Association released the playoff brackets for the Open Division, 6A football, 5A football, 4A football, 6A flag football, 5A flag football and 4A flag football

The playoffs have already begun in 3A football, 2A football and 1A football.  

And before we break down the Open Division bracket, here's a reminder of how the playoffs work in Arizona.  

1A plays a 12-team bracket, where the top four seeds received byes to the quarterfinals. That is the only conference where teams receive byes. The 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A conferences all play a 16-team bracket. The Open Division is an eight-team bracket made up of the top eight teams in 5A and 6A, as ranked by the AIA. 

Now, let's break down the Open Division bracket, starting with the overall seeds. 

2024 Open Division High School Football Playoff Seeds 

  1. Marana Tigers (10-0, 5-0) 5A Southern region champions
  2. Basha Bears (9-1, 4-0) 6A Premier Region champions
  3. ALA-Queen Creek Patriots (9-1, 3-1) 6A East Valley region champions
  4. Liberty Lions (9-1, 4-0) 6A Northeast Valley region champions
  5. Higley Knights (7-3, 3-2) 2nd place in 5A Northeast Valley region
  6. Desert Mountain Wolves (8-2, 3-2) 3rd place in 5A Northeast Valley region
  7. Horizon Huskies (8-2, 4-1) 5A Northeast Valley region champions 
  8. Hamilton Huskies (9-1, 3-1) 2nd place in 6A Premier region   

2024 Open Division Playoffs Quarterfinal Matchups  

  • No. 1 Marana will host No. 8 Hamilton  
    • This will be the first appearance in the Open Division playoffs for Marana 
    • Hamilton has appeared in all six editions of the Open Division  
      • The Huskies' best finish came in 2020 when they made it to the Open Division state title game but lost to Chandler.  
    • This will be the first time these schools will ever meet in football, according to MaxPreps
  • No. 2 Basha will host No. 7 Horizon  
    • This will be the fourth straight appearance in the Open Division for Basha  
      • Basha's best finish was in 2022 when they won the Open Division
    • This will be the second appearance in the Open Division for Horizon 
      • Horizon lost to Saguaro in the first round of the first-ever Open Division playoffs in 2019 
    • This will be the second-ever meeting between Basha and Horizon, according to MaxPreps. Horizon won the only other meeting, 45-43, in 2013. 
  • No. 3 ALA-QC will host No. 6 Desert Mountain  
    • This will be the fourth straight appearance in the Open Division for ALA-QC 
      • The Patriots have never advanced past the first round 
    • This will be the second straight appearance in the Open Division for Desert Mountain 
      • The Wolves lost to Centennial in the first round last year, where they were also the No. 6 seed 
    • This will be the first-ever meeting between ALA-QC and Desert Mountain, according to MaxPreps
  • No. 4 Liberty will host No. 5 Higley 
    • This will be the fifth-straight appearance in the Open Division for Liberty 
      • The Lions are the defending Open Division state champions  
    • This will be the first-ever appearance in the Open Division for Higley 
      • The Knights are the back-to-back reigning 5A state champions  
    • This will be the third meeting between these two schools, according to MaxPreps
      • Liberty has won both of the previous games, 28-14 in 2009 and 34-20 in 2010.

Here's a look at the initial bracket for the Open Division, which was released by the AIA on Nov. 9, 2024.

The Open Division will get next week off. The quarterfinals will be played on Friday, Nov. 22 and each game will be hosted by the higher-seeded school. 

The Open Division State Championship Game will be played on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. at ASU's Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.
