PHOENIX — Two men were found shot and killed in a Phoenix apartment complex early Tuesday, police said.
The Phoenix Police Department said James Ray Putney, 42, and Robert Rojas, 31, were shot and killed after they allegedly tried to rob the people in the complex.
Officers responded to a shots fired call at an apartment complex near 36th Street and McDowell Road around 6 a.m.
When they arrived, they found Putney near a pool, in a common area of the apartments. He had been shot. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
As officers were canvasing the apartment complex, they were directed to an apartment that witnesses believed was involved.
Officers found Rojas inside the apartment. He was pronounced deceased on scene.
There were two other people in the apartment, who were uninjured.
Those men told police that Rojas and Putney went to the apartment and attempted to rob the occupants and one of the occupants shot the two men.
The investigation will be submitted for review by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for possible charges in connection with the deaths.
