PARIS, France — Day 1 of the 2024 Olympics in Paris is in the books!
Team USA won five medals, including their first gold, but Arizona's best shot at a medal on Day 1, Mesa's Jagger Eaton, saw his event (men's street skateboarding) get postponed by rain until Monday.
Now, it is onto Day 2 and here's a look at all of the Arizona athletes competing.
Jade Carey, Women's Artistic Gymnastics
The second day of competition in Paris will see the beginning of one of the most popular events, women's gymnastics.
There won't be any medals handed out as Sunday will see the qualifying rounds. The qualifying competition is broken up into five groups, called subdivisions. Each subdivision will see teams go through four rotations, where they will compete in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.
The USA will compete in subdivision two, which will be at 2:40 a.m. Arizona time. Carey will be competing in rotations two (floor exercise) and three (vault).
The former Mountain Ridge Mountain Lion and current Oregon State Beaver is the defending Olympic gold medalist in the floor exercise.
Léon Marchand and Chase Kalisz, Men's 400-meter Individual Medley
One of the top stars for the host nation, France, will hit the pool in one of his signature events, the 400-meter individual medley, on Sunday.
We are of course talking about former Arizona State Sun Devil Léon Marchand, who was part of the national championship-winning Sun Devil men's swim team this past season. However, Marchand has transferred to the University of Texas, following head coach Bob Bowman.
Marchand is the favorite in this event, as he is currently the world record-holder (4:02.50).
One of Marchand's opponents in the 400-meter IM will be Kalisz, who trained under Bowman in Tempe as a professional.
The qualifying heats for the 400 IM will be at 2:15 a.m. Arizona time and the final will be raced at 11:30 a.m.
Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, Men's Basketball
Now to the basketball court, where Team USA will play their first game of the 2024 Olympics against three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and Serbia.
Team USA has two Phoenix Suns on its roster, Devin Booker and Kevin Durant.
It is not yet known if Durant will play against Serbia. He missed all of Team USA's training camp and pre-Olympic tune-up games with a calf injury. US head coach Steve Kerr, a former Arizona Wildcat and Phoenix Sun, said Saturday that he is hopeful that Durant will play.
Durant is a three-time gold medalist and would be the first men's basketball player to win four golds if the US wins in Paris.
Booker is seeking his second gold medal, as the was part of the gold-medal-winning US squad at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Team USA plays Serbia at 8:15 a.m.
Jordan Howard, Men's Basketball
Former Perry Puma Jordan Howard will make his Olympic debut with Puerto Rico against former Northern Arizona Sun Peter Jok and South Sudan on Sunday.
Jordan played college basketball at Central Arkansas and has spent his pro career overseas.
Puerto Rico qualified for the Olympics by winning a qualifying tournament on July 7.
Puerto Rico and South Sudan will face off at 2 a.m.
Trinity San Antonio, Women's Basketball
The Puerto Rico women's basketball team will also be on the court on Sunday and will feature the talents of Grand Canyon University's Trinity San Antonio.
San Antonio was named to the 2023-24 All-WAC defensive team and transferred to GCU before this past season from California Baptist.
She started in 28 games for GCU this past season and led the Lopes in scoring with 11.5 points per game.
The Puerto Rico women will play Serbia at noon Arizona time.
Paige Heyn, Women's Street Skateboarding
After a rain delay on Saturday, the Olympic skateboarding competition will begin on Sunday with women's street, which will feature Tempe's Paige Heyn.
The 16-year-old and has been skating since she was 4, when her uncle gave her a skateboard. She then began skateboarding in her neighborhood before getting lessons at KTR, an indoor skate park in the East Valley.
Heyn began to notice how talented she was in 2019 when she got invited to a world championship in Brazil.
She is one of the youngest members of Team USA in 2024.
Women's street skateboarding will begin at 3 a.m.
Gabi Rennie, Women's Soccer
And rounding out the Arizonans competing in Paris on Sunday is former Sun Devil Gabi Rennie, who will hit the pitch when New Zealand takes on Colombia.
Rennie and New Zealand will be looking to bounce back after losing their first game to Canada, 2-1, on July 25.
Rennie played four minutes in the opening match.
New Zealand will play Colombia at 8 a.m.
