PHOENIX — Love it or hate it, the transfer portal is here to stay in college football. Just look at the 2023 Heisman Trophy finalists, which included three quarterbacks — winner Jayden Daniels (ASU to LSU), Bo Nix (Auburn to Oregon) and Michael Penix Jr. (Indiana to Washington) — who had all transferred.
After the 2022-23 season, the portal helped Colorado head coach Deion Sanders flip his roster by welcoming in 51 transfers and letting 57 players transfer out.
ASU had the next largest transfer class in the nation in 2023 as 31 players came to Tempe for head coach Kenny Dillingham's first season, including running back Cameron Skattebo (from Sacramento State), running back DeCarlos Brooks (from Cal) and linebacker Tate Romney (from BYU).
ASU saw the other side of the transfer portal as well, as 29 players left the program including linebacker Connor Soelle (Oregon), kicker Jace Feely (Colorado) and offensive tackle LaDarius Henderson (Michigan).
Down in Tucson, head coach Jedd Fisch and the Arizona Wildcats saw 26 players enter the transfer portal in 2023, with the most notable being wide receiver Dorian Singer, who left for USC. Arizona had one of the smallest transfer classes in the Pac-12 last season, as only eight players transferred in.
Transfer portal season is back once again, as college football is in the midst of the 30-day winter transfer portal window for players to enter the portal and 12Sports is tracking the latest for ASU, Arizona and NAU.
