Arizona's first high school football playoff games of 2024 have gone final. Here's who is headed to the quarterfinals in 1A.

While the big schools won't start the playoffs for a few weeks, the chase for a golden football is on for some of Arizona's smallest schools in 1A.

PHOENIX — The chase for the first golden football of 2024 is officially on. 

The AIA high school football playoffs began on Friday night with first-round action in 1A, which plays eight-man football.  

1A plays a 12-team bracket, which was revealed last Saturday. The means the top four seeds — Hayden, Bagdad, Mogollon and St. David —  got byes through Friday night's first round and will host the teams that won in the first round.  

Here's a look at the results from the first round of the 1A playoffs. 

1A Playoffs First Round Results 

  • No. 5 Mohave Accelerated defeats No. 12 Salome, 36-22 
    • Mohave Accelerated advances and will play No. 4 St. David in the quarterfinals 
  • No. 6 El Capitan vs. No. 11 Superior, game at 11 a.m. on Saturday 
    • The winner will advance to play No. 3 Mogollon in the quarterfinals 
  • No. 7 Lincoln Prep defeats No. 10 Desert Heights Prep, 40-35 
    • Lincoln Prep advances and will play No. 2 Bagdad in the quarterfinals 
  • No. 8 Desert Christian defeats No. 9 Williams, 56-16 
    • Desert Christian advances and will play No. 1 Hayden in the quarterfinals

The game between No. 11 Superior and No. 6 El Capitan will be played on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m.

All four quarterfinal games will played at the home stadium of the higher-seeded school and will kick off at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1. 

The 1A State Championship game will be played at 6 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Coronado High School in Scottsdale. 

No. 1 Hayden is looking to defend their 2023 1A state title. The Lobos beat Mogollon 60-32 in last year's title game.
