PHOENIX — Are you ready for some playoff football on Friday Night Fever, Arizona's No. 1 and longest-running high school football show?
The first playoff games are less than a week away, as 1A, which plays 8-man football, will start their playoffs next Friday!
Before we get to the matchups, here's how the playoffs work in Arizona high school football.
The 1A conference plays a 12-team bracket where four teams get byes to the quarterfinals. For the 2A-6A conferences, 16-team brackets will be played. In the Open Division, an eight-team bracket made up of the best teams from 5A and 6A will be played.
2024 1A Playoff Seeds
Now, with all that in mind, here are the teams that made the playoffs in 1A, listed from the No. 1 seed to the No. 12 seed.
- Hayden Lobos (9-0) 1A East region champions
- Bagdad Sultans (8-1) 1A West region champions
- Mogollon Mustangs (7-1), 1A North region champions
- St. David Tigers (8-1) 1A South region champions
- Mohave Accelerated Patriots (7-2)
- El Capitan Eagles (6-3)
- Lincoln Prep Lightning (6-2)
- Desert Christian Eagles (5-3)
- Williams Vikings (4-5)
- Desert Heights Prep Coyotes (6-3)
- Superior Panthers (5-4)
- Salome Frogs (4-4)
2024 1A Playoff First Round Matchups
Since this is a 12-team playoff bracket, the first four seeds, Hayden, Bagdad, Mogollon and St. David will get byes and will play home games in the quarterfinals.
Here's a look at the matchups in the first round.
No. 5 Mohave Accelerated will host No. 12 Salome. The winner of that game will play No. 4 St. David in the quarterfinals.
No. 6 El Capitan will host No. 11 Superior. The winner of that game will play No. 3 Mogollon in the quarterfinals.
No. 7 Lincoln Prep will host No. 10 Desert Heights Prep. The winner of that game will play No. 2 Bagdad in the quarterfinals.
No. 8 Desert Christian will host No. 9 Williams. The winner of that game will play No. 1 Hayden in the quarterfinals.
All four first-round games will be played at 7 p.m. on Oct. 25.
The 1A State Championship Game will be played at 6 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Coronado High School in Scottsdale.
The Hayden Lobos are the defending champions as they beat Mogollon 60-32 in the 2023 title game. Mogollon came into that game as the three-time defending champion.
