Key races in Arizona tighten as Maricopa County inches closer to counting all ballots

Rep. Ruben Gallego held a lead of roughly 100,000 votes over Kari Lake Tuesday night. By Wednesday, that number was nearly cut in half.

PHOENIX — Several races are still too close to call, and getting closer as Arizona nears a complete count of its ballots.

Maricopa County has yet to count all of the early ballots that arrived by last Friday. The county is expected to release its next vote drop after 7 p.m.

On Tuesday night, Rep. Ruben Gallego held a roughly 100,000-vote lead over Kari Lake in the Senate race. However, by Wednesday morning, that lead had dwindled to about 61,000 votes.

It wasn't only the Senatorial race that saw leads tighten or even flip. Almost across the board, Republicans made gains to catch up or pull ahead of their respective opponents.

In Congressional District 1, Rep. David Schweikert overtook Amish Shah by about 5,000 votes, overturning Shah's lead from the night before.

"I can't stress this enough, Republicans have a huge registration advantage over Democrats," 12News political reporter Brahm Resnik explained. "You saw that in the early ballot returns. They were about 200,000 returns ahead — not necessarily votes — but that does reflect that we have a lot more Republicans turning in ballots."

There are still a lot of unknowns about Arizona's final ballot counts.

One of the big factors is the "late-early ballots" — those early ballots that were filled out ahead of time and then turned in on the day of the election. Those ballots still need to be counted through a rigorous verification process.
