PHOENIX — Incumbent Rep. David Schweikert and former Rep. Amish Shah are running to represent Arizona's 1st Congressional District, an area that stretches across much of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Fountain Hills.
The wealthy district has long been considered a Republican stronghold in the state. However, with nearly a third of its voting base registered as Independent, it's now considered one of the most competitive districts in Arizona.

David Schweikert (Incumbent - R)
Born in California, Rep. Schweikert is a small business owner and long-time member of Arizona politics having first been elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1991. He was initially elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2011, and has been a member since.
Rep. Schweikert was previously a member of the House Freedom Caucus, a hardline conservative group within the House but left in 2023.
In 2022, Schweikert voiced his approval of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe V. Wade but pushed back on the Arizona Supreme Court's decision to uphold a near-total abortion ban this April.
The incumbent said one of his top priorities is the economy. Schweikert sits on the House Ways and Means Committee and said from the people he's spoken with in the district, inflation and trying to survive financially is a struggle.
"Arizona’s financial sector plays a critical role in growing the economy and bringing jobs to our state. Entrepreneurs know that Arizona is one of the best places in the country to start a business, and as a Co-Chair of the Congressional Entrepreneurship Caucus, it is one of my highest priorities to help foster a hyper-efficient economy in our state," Schweikert's website reads.
Amish Shah (D)
Democrat Dr. Amish Shah, originally from Chicago, spent 20 years an an emergency room physician in Arizona before his run for Congress. Shah was previously elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2017 and left in Feb., 2024.
Shah put increasing access to healthcare and raising teachers' salaries at the forefront of his campaign. He previously sponsored a bill to repeal Arizona's abortion ban.
"Dr. Shah is an emergency room physician who is committed to lowering healthcare costs and standing up to Big Pharma to end the price gouging of essential medications like insulin," Shah's campaign website says in part. "He believes that politicians should stay out of personal medical decisions, and he will work tirelessly to ensure that women have the freedom to make choices about their own bodies."
