AP: Rep. David Schweikert has defeated Amish Shah, will represent Congressional District 1 in Congress

Rep. David Schweikert has been reelected to his seat in Congress, which represents much of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Fountain Hills.

PHOENIX — Incumbent Rep. David Schweikert and former Rep. Amish Shah were locked in a tight battle in Arizona's 1st Congressional District, an area that stretches across much of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Fountain Hills, by Schweikert has been reelected according to the Associated Press. 

The AP called the race at 8:03 p.m. Arizona time on Sunday. This race had seen Shah get within 5,000 votes of Schweikert, but after Maricopa County's latest ballot drop, the incumbent's lead grew to 17,376 votes, leading the AP to call the race. 

The wealthy district has long been considered a Republican stronghold in the state. However, with nearly a third of its voting base registered as Independent, it's now considered one of the most competitive districts in Arizona.

As of 2023, 804,256 people live in CD1 according to the US Census Bureau.

The National Republican Congressional Committee released a statement after the AP called the race, which reads: 

Congratulations to Representative David Schweikert on his re-election. Scottsdale and Phoenix families count on Representative Schweikert to fight for lower taxes, securing the border and defending public safety, and Representative Schweikert will continue delivering for Arizonans.

David Schweikert (Incumbent - R)

Born in California, Rep. Schweikert is a small business owner and long-time member of Arizona politics having first been elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1991. He was initially elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2011, and has been a member since.

Rep. Schweikert was previously a member of the House Freedom Caucus, a hardline conservative group within the House but left in 2023.

In 2022, Schweikert voiced his approval of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe V. Wade but pushed back on the Arizona Supreme Court's decision to uphold a near-total abortion ban this April.

The incumbent said one of his top priorities is the economy. Schweikert sits on the House Ways and Means Committee and said from the people he's spoken with in the district, inflation and trying to survive financially is a struggle.

"Arizona’s financial sector plays a critical role in growing the economy and bringing jobs to our state. Entrepreneurs know that Arizona is one of the best places in the country to start a business, and as a Co-Chair of the Congressional Entrepreneurship Caucus, it is one of my highest priorities to help foster a hyper-efficient economy in our state," Schweikert's website reads.
