PHOENIX — A Phoenix police commander who was shot and killed in the line of duty on March 29th was laid to rest on Tuesday.
Commander Greg Carnicle was laid to rest at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Phoenix on Tuesday.
Carnicle's immediate family were the only ones allowed inside the funeral mass, but the Phoenix Police Department streamed it on Facebook.
The live stream of the funeral was shared on the 12 News Facebook page and 12News.com.
To show support, Phoenix Police and Fire employees linked their city vehicles on 35th Avenue, starting in front of St. Jerome Catholic Church and heading south.
Community members also participated in a brief moment of silence at noon on Facebook Live with the Phoenix Police Department.
The community was encouraged to create their own tribute message and share it on social media with the hashtag #RIPGregCarnicle. Those would be shared with the family.
The department said a larger community memorial service will happen once restrictions on large gatherings are lifted to pay proper tribute to Carnicle and his 31 years of service to Phoenix.
Carnicle was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call in Phoenix on March 29.

The suspect, 22-year-old Jacob Emry Mcilveen, was pronounced dead on scene after barricading himself in the house for several hours after the shooting.
Carnicle was just months away from retiring when he was killed.
Two other officers who were injured in the shooting, Alicia Hubert and Marissa Dowhan, have both been released from the hospital. They met outside of the hospital when Officer Dowhan was released and embraced.
