PHOENIX — In the midst of the massive Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) fraud scandal, it can be hard to find legitimate services for those in need.
There are hundreds of businesses that have had their ability to bill the state Medicare program suspended because of allegations of fraud. Some have been accused of billing for dead people, billing for people in jail and more.
Former clients have told 12News the treatment they received was not up to standards.
So how can you find a legitimate rehab that will help you or a loved one?
Nikki Fordey is a licensed substance abuse counselor, licensed social worker and has a degree in psychology, a master's degree in public policy and another in clinical social work.
She said finding a good rehab program starts with getting a real evaluation.
"It should really start with a very thorough assessment and screening process," Fordey said.
And that person should be someone with qualifications, she said. That person should be able to tell the patient what level of care they need, from detox to a sober living arrangement.
Once you find a facility, Fordey said you should check their accreditation through The Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization that accredits more than 22,000 U.S. health care organizations and programs.
"That's one of the things they look at is, show us all your documentation," Fordey said. "Show us your paperwork, how are you effectively placing people who are coming to you for help?"
That's not necessarily something the State of Arizona will always do. Some businesses require licenses, others don't. Fordey said there are loopholes. For example, state law does not require a license for a business to call itself a sober living facility.
And finally, Fordey said you should ask questions. A good rehab program should be able to answer detailed questions about treatment, goals and even what they do in case of a relapse.
