PHOENIX — A popular Mexican restaurant in Phoenix that was named the best restaurant in the nation in 2022 by Yelp has been forced to close after being damaged by a fire on Sunday, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Phoenix fire says crews were called to Cocina Madrigal, which is located just north of the intersection of 16th Street and Broadway Road, around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday due to reports of smoke inside the restaurant.

When they got to the scene, firefighters battled a fire in the kitchen. They were able to get everyone out of the restaurant quickly while they fought the flames. A ladder truck also got crews to the roof of the restaurant so they could attack the fire from above.

Fire investigators are still at the restaurant working to find out what started the fire.

Cocina Madrigal has been named one of the top 100 restaurants in the nation by Yelp five times and even earned the top spot on the list in 2022. In the most recent version of the list, which was released in January, the restaurant was ranked 52nd.
