PHOENIX — When rising floodwaters threatened people in the Grand Canyon back in August, these men and women stepped up to help.

A commendation ceremony was held Monday for the Havasupai tribal members, National Guard Crew and Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs tribal liaison who helped coordinate and manage evacuation efforts during the flood.

"What was a normal day turned quickly into an emergency. People were scared, panicked, worried and it was critical that quick action was taken," Gov. Katie Hobbs said during the ceremony. "The resiliency of the Havasupai people continues to be evident."

The devastating flash flood happened Aug. 22, leading to the death of one woman who was swept away and the displacement of 25 families. Over 100 people had to be airlifted out of the canyon during the flood.

Extensive damage led to the closure of the trail to Havasu Canyon, the Havasupai Campground and the Havasu Falls areas. The main trail to Supai Village, trails within the village, tribal member homes, public utility systems and nearby campgrounds were also damaged.

Hobbs officially commended the crew and community members who stepped up during the flood, thanking them for their bravery.

Hobbs was joined by Havasupai Tribal Councilwoman Dianna Sue Uqualla and Adjutant Major General Kerry Muehlenbeck.
