SUPAI, Ariz. — A week after flash flooding on the Havasupai Creek that killed one woman and left hikers stranded, the community is coming together to support tribal members impacted by the storm.
According to Mercy Worldwide Arizona, 25 families have been displaced, each averaging four members. 12 homes suffered severe damage from the flood, which destroyed the tribe's only means of access via foot, horse, or mule.
Chas Jordan, Director of Mercy Worldwide Arizona, said when they found out what happened, they saw an opportunity to show compassion and do actions to support it.
Jordan said their teams in Phoenix and Tucson have been working closely with the Havasupai Tribe's board of chairmen, to discuss urgent needs for the tribe.
The organization has begun to collect donations at the Arizona Career Development Center in Phoenix and four locations in Tucson.
A statement on the Havasupai Tribe's website said, "The main trail to Supai Village, trails within the village, tribal member homes, public utility systems and the campgrounds were damaged. The Tribe is grateful for the outpouring of support and offers to provide assistance. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support the Tribe's relief efforts. Your donation will be used to purchase much-needed goods and supplies for our Tribe's rebuilding and restoration efforts."
