ADEQ requiring company to make corrections after nitric acid spill in Buckeye

More than 10,000 pounds of nitric acid were spilled last month, resulting in clouds of gas getting released into the air.

BUCKEYE, Ariz. — Environmental officials are requiring a company to make corrections after 10,000 pounds of nitric acid were spilled in Buckeye last month.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality announced Friday it had sent a "Notice of Violation" to the Thatcher Company following a hazmat situation reported on June 21.

The notice demands Thatcher to provide photographic evidence documenting the company had taken "appropriate corrective actions" to ensure its facilities are minimizing the possibility of another hazardous situation.

"ADEQ is committed to holding this facility accountable and working with them to help prevent future incidents. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of all Arizonans," ADEQ Waste Programs Division Director Julie Riemenschneider said in a statement.

Thatcher has been given 30 days to comply with the notice's orders or ADEQ could take civil action. The notice accuses the company of multiple infractions of federal and state environmental laws.

The June 21 event resulted in officials issuing shelter-in-place orders for nearby residents due to air quality concerns. No injuries or illnesses were reported at the time.
