HAZMAT situation in Buckeye caused by nitric acid spill, police say

Buckeye police and fire worked HAZMAT situation near Rainbow Road and Southern Avenue on Friday. Here's what police say happened.

BUCKEYE, Ariz. — A shelter in place order issued in response to a HAZMAT situation in Buckeye was lifted shortly after 6:30 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

According to the Buckeye Police Department, officers were called out to Thatcher Company on Rainbow Road just before 4:30 p.m. Friday for a potential HAZMAT situation.

An employee had been filling a commercial vehicle with nitric acid when a spill occurred, sending a chemical plume into the air. Buckeye police then issued a shelter-in-place notification.

Officers learned that approximately 200 gallons of nitric acid had leaked into a retention basin designed for spills. The chemical came into contact with an unknown metal causing a gaseous reaction. Employees were able to shut down a pump to stop the leak.

No injuries or illnesses were reported.

According to the Thatcher website, they are a chemical manufacturer and distributor.
