PHOENIX — Phoenix police busted a cockfighting operation late Thursday afternoon.

Officers got a call that cockfights were going on near 9th street and Broadway. When they showed up, a group of people ran off.

The officers were able to stop several of them, and that's when they found the cockfighting operation as well as illegal gambling.

Police and the Arizona Humane Society took 203 roosters, 100 hens and two dogs away. Ten people were cited and released for being present at a cockfight.

Cockfighting has been a felony in Arizona since a law was passed by voters outlawing the practice. Anyone caught at a cockfight can face misdemeanor charges as well.
