'All taken away': Gilbert family goes 2 years with no answers in teen's murder

Rachel Hansen, 19, was shot to death by an intruder in the early morning hours of June 4, 2022.

GILBERT, Ariz. — There have been no answers for the family of a Gilbert 19-year-old who was shot and killed by someone who broke into her apartment almost two years ago.

Now, Rachel Hansen's mom is asking the community for help.

Kim Hansen said she doesn't know who or why someone killed her daughter in the middle of the night on June 4, 2022.

It's that lack of answers that pushed her to social media.

Hansen posted to the Facebook group "Go Gilbert" to tell the group who her daughter was and what happened to her. She asked anyone with information about the crime to go to the police with what they know.

According to Kim Hansen, Rachel Hansen was driven and a real go-getter. She had just moved into her apartment near San Tan Village Parkway and Ray Road.

Kim Hansen said Rachel Hansen was the one who called 911 at around 2 a.m. on the morning she was murdered. She told the 911 dispatcher she had been shot by someone she didn't know.

Since then, Kim Hansen and her family have been waiting for answers about who killed Rachel Hansen.

"We don't know why or how, and that's why we want answers and then I just want the community to know what a wonderful young lady she was, with so much potential and just starting her life and had already given so much back to the community at her young age of 19, and that was all taken away," said Kim Hansen.

While Gilbert police tell 12News the case is still being actively investigated, Kim Hansen said she was told in February that the case was turned over to Silent Witness as the department had exhausted what they knew.

A reward of up to $7,000 is being offered for information in the case.

If you have information that can help solve the case and bring closure to the family you're asked to call Silent Witness at 480-Witness.
