PHOENIX — A man who police say tried to steal three cars at gunpoint is in custody after residents of a Phoenix neighborhood wrestled him to the ground and disarmed him Tuesday night, according to police.

A 39-year-old man tried to carjack two separate vehicles from the shopping center parking lot near 75th Avenue and McDowell Road around 8 p.m., police said.

He was not able to get either car. Police said he shot at one of the vehicles as the victim sped away, but the victim was not hurt.

Police said the suspect then went into a nearby neighborhood and tried to steal another car, but was unsuccessful again.

That's when neighbors in the area subdued him until police were able to take him into custody.

Nobody was injured by gunfire throughout the incident.
