Man arrested for allegedly firing AR-15, handgun at 7 officers in Chandler

Zachary Victor Rhodes allegedly fired about 100 rounds from an AR-15 and handgun at police in Chandler. No one was injured.

PHOENIX — A man was arrested for allegedly firing about 100 rounds from an AR-15 and handgun at police from the parking lot of an apartment complex in Chandler, but no one was injured. 

Zachary Victor Rhodes, 26, allegedly fired at officers while in the parking lot of his complex near Commonwealth Avenue and Hamilton Street around midnight. 

Rhodes fired at the first officer on scene, striking his patrol car and hitting his windshield. The officer was able to take cover behind his car. 

After this, multiple officers arrived on scene and a Mesa Police Department helicopter was dispatched to help. 

Rhodes continued to fire rounds as he moved east along Commonwealth Avenue.

Officers on the ground were able to corner Rhodes when he moved to a dirt lot along Commonwealth Avenue and two blocks west of McQueen Road. 

He was taken into custody around 1 a.m. 

Rhodes was in possession of the AR-15 at at least one handgun, which he used to fire at officers and into the air. 

A search of his apartment uncovered loaded rifle magazines. Investigators estimated he fired around 100 rounds on seven police officers. 

No officers fired a round of their weapons. 

No one was injured. 

Rhodes was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on seven counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. 

He is currently being held on a $2 million cash bond.
