TUCSON, Ariz. — Pima County authorities have released a 911 call and bodycam footage from the night of Dec. 21, 2023, when two officers were shot after responding to a domestic dispute.

Deputies with the Pima County Sheriff's Department responded to a home near Shannon and Overton roads in Casas Adobes after a 911 call was placed about someone trying to take a child they did not have custody of.

"We have a problem, he tried to take the kid," a person who later identifies himself as the child's grandfather says in the 911 call. "He is trying to say he has the paperwork and the mother is not here, I'm the grandfather and we are not going to let him take the kid."

When deputies responded, the suspect, who was identified as Jordyn Guadalupe Sanchez, 29, who did not have court-ordered custody of the child, would not separate himself from the child and tried to leave with the child, Pima County officials said.

When deputies tried to take Sanchez into custody, he got into a struggle with officers, video shows, and the officers and Sanchez ended up on the ground outside. The first gunshot is heard shortly after. Officials did not say who fired the first shot.

Officers and Sanchez then continued to exchange gunfire, with more than a dozen shots heard on the video. Both deputies and Sanchez were shot, officials said.

Deputies can then be heard on the radio calling for help.

"I've been shot!" one deputy yells.

Sanchez fled the scene but was later caught down the street, Pima County officials said. The two deputies and Sanchez were taken to Banner University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Sanchez was treated for his injuries and booked into jail. He faces multiple felony charges including attempted murder, felony endangerment and custodial interference.

Both deputies, Jaylon McEuen and Leonardo Wells, have since been released from the hospital are are recovering at home with their families, Pima County officials said.

Wells was the deputy who fired his weapon during the event, officials said.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is handling the criminal investigation.
