APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. — A man who crashed into an Elks Lodge in Apache Junction has been charged with 12 counts of aggravated assault and 17 counts of endangerment.
Thomas Kain, 73, is also charged with DUI and more charges are expected, officials with the Apache Junction Police Department said.
According to police, Kain was leaving the Elks Lodge when he drove into the building, injuring 30 people inside. Thankfully, no one was killed.
One person who was in critical condition is now stable, officials said.
The city said that alcohol was a factor, and released the following statement:
This accident shows just how dangerous it can be to drink and drive. Alcohol impairs your ability to drive safely by reducing your reaction time and decision-making skills. We are grateful that there were no fatalities and this story could have ended very differently. We want everyone to remember that drunk driving can have serious consequences, not just for the driver but for everyone around them. To keep our community safe, always plan ahead for a safe ride if you’ve been drinking and encourage friends and family to do the same.
