30 people hurt after truck crashes into Arizona restaurant. City says drunk driving to blame.

The crash happened near the Elks Lodge near Lost Dutchman Boulevard and Apache Trail on Saturday. Here's what we know.

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. — Apache Junction city officials have confirmed that 30 people were hurt when a suspected drunk driver crashed into an occupied restaurant.

The crash happened at the Elks Lodge, located at 2455 N Apache Trail, just east of the intersection of Lost Dutchman Boulevard and Apache Trail.

The Superstition Fire and Medical District told 12News that a truck crashed into the restaurant, injuring several people inside.

Ten people were hospitalized after the crash according to the Apache Junction Police Department. Fifteen others were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

City officials have since shared that five other people drove themselves to local hospitals for treatment. One person is in critical but stable condition after the crash, officials said.

AJPD arrested the driver, 73-year-old Thomas Edward Kain. According to police, Kain was leaving the Elks Lodge when he drove into the building.

The city said that alcohol was a factor, and released the following statement:

This accident shows just how dangerous it can be to drink and drive. Alcohol impairs your ability to drive safely by reducing your reaction time and decision-making skills. We are grateful that there were no fatalities and this story could have ended very differently. We want everyone to remember that drunk driving can have serious consequences, not just for the driver but for everyone around them. To keep our community safe, always plan ahead for a safe ride if you’ve been drinking and encourage friends and family to do the same.

The City of Apache Junction also released a statement about the crash on Facebook. It reads:

On behalf of our Mayor and City Council, our hearts go out to everyone affected by this incident currently being worked by the Apache Junction Police Department. We extend our deepest concern and support to the victims and their families, and want to acknowledge our first responders who are working tirelessly to support them during this time.

On behalf of our Mayor and City Council, our hearts go out to everyone affected by this incident currently being worked...
