PHOENIX — A man who "violently" attacked several Phoenix police officers earlier this year has been sentenced to seven years in prison, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced the sentencing for Elias Retes, 28, on Friday.

Retes pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault, a Class 3 felony, and one count of aggravated assault, a Class 4 felony, Mitchell said.

Mitchell said Retes attacked the officers in May after they responded to reports of someone setting fires near 7th Avenue and McDowell Street.

The Phoenix Police Department said three police officers were injured during the encounter with Retes. Two of the officers required hospitalization and the third was treated at an urgent care clinic after the attack.

“Violence against our men and women in blue shows a lack of regard for public safety that will simply not be tolerated in Maricopa County,” said Mitchell.

In addition to his seven-year sentence, Retes will also have three years of supervised probation, MCAO said.
