PHOENIX — A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for attacking a 70-year-old woman in downtown Phoenix.

According to Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, Brian Kibiwot Chuchuney was sentenced for the attack in December 2023.

During the attack on Dec. 17, 2023, the woman was working her job as a receptionist at an apartment complex when Chuchuney asked to enter the complex.

Reportedly, the woman admitted Chuchuney mistakingly. When he asked the woman for water, Chuchuney followed her and sexually abused her, officials said. Afterward, Chuchuney took the woman's clothes before leaving.

He was found by police a few hours later.

“This defendant’s heinous actions and lack of remorse make it clear that he poses a significant danger to the community,” said Mitchell. “Thanks to the work of Deputy County Attorney Maren Soreson, he will now spend decades in prison, facing the consequence of his actions.”

Chuchuney pled guilty to one count of kidnapping and two counts of attempt to commit sexual assault in July. Along with the 20-year sentence for kidnapping, he received lifetime supervised probation for each count of attempted sexual assault.

The victim in the incident also shared a statement to the court.

“Your cruelty has hurt me physically, and financially, but above all, the emotional blow you inflicted has shattered my life, capacity to work and severely wounded my family,” she said.
