Documents reveal Gilbert woman murdered 2 years ago reported someone threatening her in the weeks before her death

Rachel Hansen was killed two years ago and her case remains unsolved. 12News went through 300 pages of reports, learning new details of the time before her death.

GILBERT, Arizona — New documents revealed more information surrounding the death of a 19-year-old Gilbert woman.

Rachel Hansen was murdered two years ago and her death remains unsolved. 12News went through more than 300 pages of police reports and spoke with Rachel Hansen's mom, Kim Hansen, about the new information.

"We truly believe that somebody, somewhere, knows something," Kim Hansen said. "I think one thing that we can all agree on is that this was not a random act of violence."

12News obtained the transcript of the 911 call and police bodycam footage from the night Rachel Hansen was shot and killed in her Gilbert apartment.

Hansen was just 19 years old when she was shot and killed inside her Gilbert apartment in June 2022. Hansen had called 911 and reported a stranger entered her apartment near San Tan Village Parkway and Ray Road.

Bodycam footage, which has been completely blurred with some of the footage blacked out and the sound heavily redacted, shows several officers' viewpoints as they arrived at the scene. It is unclear how long they waited to go inside and what they found once they did.

In the documents obtained by 12News, it is stated that someone threatened Rachel Hansen in the weeks before she was killed.

The Gilbert Police Department found she called police in April of 2022 to allegedly report her fiancé's dad had threatened her, documents state.

When 12News asked Gilbert Police Department Assistant Chief Jim Bisceglie whether or not Rachel Hansen's fiancé's father was investigated, he did not confirm nor deny any such investigation took place.

"I can't, unfortunately, speak to everybody we've talked to," Bisceglie said. "Our detectives tirelessly investigated every lead, spoke to a lot of people, and followed up on every lead possible."

Much of the reports were redacted, including what information was gathered from interviews with people of interest and others.

"The redactions are there because we feel that if that information was released, it could jeopardize a case," Bisceglie said. "Like I said before, people know specifically what happened."

But the redactions are difficult for Rachel Hansen's family to bear.

"It's so hard as a grieving family to wait so long with no answers," Kim Hansen said. "It's just it's really hard to go on in everyday life."

On the top of each page of the police reports it says the case is "inactive - suspended, lack of leads or suspects," which is something Rachel Hansen's family has wondered about.

The last entry made by the detective in the case is from February of 2024, when he advises the case was sent to Silent Witness, and wrote "the case will be DNR-inactive pending any new information or possible leads."

"I could tell you the case is not inactive. The case is an active case," Bisceglie told 12News. "There's some system limitations in our CAD computer-aided dispatch to someone. How we classify cases basically as new leads are coming in. We're investigating those new leads."

Bisceglie said some information has come into police through the Silent Witness program, but not recently.

"I'm pleading with people out there that know what happened, to do the right thing and come forward," Bisceglie said. "Rachel's family deserves justice for her, for what took place to her two years ago."

A GoFundMe has helped raise additional funds to add to the Silent Witness reward in Rachel Hansen's case. Any information that leads to an arrest in the case is eligible for a $10,000 reward. Tips can be called into Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

“We're just hoping that, if we continue to raise funding for the reward money, eventually, that will encourage somebody that has some knowledge of something to come forward, to share something, to do a silent witness tip anonymously,” Kim Hansen said.
