'Someone broke in and shot me': 911 call, bodycam footage released in killing of Rachel Hansen

Hansen was just 19 years old when she was shot and killed inside her Gilbert apartment in June 2022.

GILBERT, Ariz. — 12News has obtained the transcript of the 911 call and police bodycam footage from the night Rachel Hansen was shot and killed in her Gilbert apartment.

Hansen was just 19 years old when she was shot and killed inside her Gilbert apartment in June 2022. Hansen had called 911 and reported a stranger entered her apartment near San Tan Village Parkway and Ray Road.

"Hi. I've been shot. Someone broke in and shot me," Hansen told the dispatcher. She was able to give the dispatcher her address and apartment number. She asked the dispatcher to hurry and said she was bleeding.

She also told the dispatcher that the person who shot her left the scene.

Bodycam footage, which has been completely blurred with some of the footage blacked out and the sound heavily redacted, shows several officers' viewpoints as they arrived at the scene. It is unclear how long they waited to go inside and what they found once they did.

One video alone had 10 minutes of blacked-out footage.

She was taken to a hospital where she died.

Hansen's mother, Kim Hansen, saw the video for the first time just 30 minutes before we did.

"Though we're grateful to have something released, we're surprised at what was released," Kim Hansen said.

12News asked Gilbert police for an interview but hasn't heard back yet.

Gilbert police also previously refused and ignored 12News' multiple requests for public records, including the 911 call, police reports and body camera footage. 12News worked with an attorney in April and received the records on Thursday, two years after Rachel Hansen's death and a year after they were first requested.

With so many questions left unanswered, Kim Hansen hopes fliers will not just keep Rachel's name top of mind, but also keep their family's dream of finding justice alive.

"I feel like we're kind of at a standstill and that's why as grieving parents we're going to do what we can to try and raise awareness," Kim said. "I don't know how far this will go but we have to do something instead of just sit and wait. One of my favorite sayings is: 'As Long As We're Breathing There's Hope,' so there's hope."

There currently is a $7,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. If you have any information you can call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
