PHOENIX — The 18-year-old who brutally beat a teenager in north Phoenix last May has been sentenced to six months in jail.
Adam Zodrow told the court Friday he had "full remorse" for an assault that knocked out 15-year-old Kevin Durkin's teeth outside of an In-N-Out restaurant.
Durkin's family told Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Joseph Kreamer that they're still haunted by the events of May 27, 2023, and they've had to spend thousands of dollars on all the medical bills to treat Kevin's mouth.
Kevin and his friends were at the fast food restaurant when some other teenagers started hitting their car. A fight ensued that ended with Kevin getting sucker-punched by someone wearing brass knuckles.
Brittney Durkin, Kevin's mother, told the court about the moments when she returned to the parking lot and retrieved the loose teeth that had been knocked out of her son's mouth.
"The last six months have felt like a lifetime," Durkin said Friday.
Zodrow told Judge Kreamer he felt "truly horrible" about what happened to Kevin and he's haunted by his actions every day.
The judge chose not to credit the defendant with any time previously served in jail, meaning he will serve the full six-month sentence. Afterward, Zodrow will be placed on supervised probation for four years.
The defendant was also ordered to pay the victim's family at least $3,500 in restitution.
