Serrano family closing downtown restaurant after 100 years of doing business in Chandler

The Serrano family has been running businesses in Chandler since the early 20th century. The family has decided to close its restaurant near Chandler City Hall.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Serrano family, who has been operating businesses in Chandler for over a century, has announced they will be closing their restaurant near Chandler City Hall on June 1, 2024.

With greater competition for customers in the downtown area, Serrano's Mexican Restaurant had experienced a decline in business and the 13,000-square-foot restaurant had become too expensive to operate.

"As the oldest family owned business in Chandler, we did not make this decision lightly. Our Chandler location is the only one we own outright," the Serrano family wrote in an Instagram post.

The other Serrano's locations throughout the East Valley will remain open.

Members of the Serrano family have had a presence in the East Valley since 1919 after Albert and Luis Serrano opened a dry goods store that serviced the region's many farm families, according to the East Valley Tribune.

The Serrano family transitioned their enterprise into the restaurant business in the late 1970s. The success of the first Serrano's restaurant led to the family opening more restaurants in other parts of the East Valley.

The family hosted a big 40th anniversary celebration at its Chandler location in 2019.

"We are grateful to all of our customers and employees who have made the past 44 years in Chandler a blessing for our family," the Serranos wrote in their Instagram post. "We would also be remiss not to mention our late parents, Ernie and Eva, who built this business and showed us firsthand the value of hard work."
