Why is the sky so hazy today?

12News meteorologists break down why you may want to stay inside today if you're sensitive to dust or dirt.

PHOENIX — Seeing hazy skies, Phoenix? You're not imagining things. There is a lot of dust in the air in the Valley and parts of Eastern Arizona causing skies to appear hazier than usual.

Dust first advanced into Arizona Wednesday night into Thursday from New Mexico. Our first round of monsoon storms erupted and put out strong outflow winds which continued to kick up dust on Thursday, as well.

Wind advisories have been issued today for portions of Eastern Arizona, and dust is stirring up more trouble there. Storms later today could also continue to disturb the dirt.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is forecasting the 24-hour average to be below the federal health standard, so they said they are not planning on issuing a PM-10 (dust) High Pollution Advisory. But even without the high pollution advisory, those who are sensitive to dust should stay indoors.

Throughout the weekend, thunderstorm chances are expected to continue in higher terrain to the north and east of the Valley. There is plenty of moisture in the air, which means storms will be forming along the Mogollon Rim and more storms to the east and southeast of the Valley.
