PHOENIX — Meeee-ouch! If you’ve noticed you’re causing more static shocks than normal, you’re not alone.

Shocks become amplified under certain weather conditions. During the winter, when the air is cold and dry outside, coupled with the usage of a central heating system inside, this electric exchange is supercharged.

For the same reason we get dry cracked lips and hands during the winter, the lack of moisture is closely related to static discharge. 

Cold air does not hold as much moisture as a warm air mass does. As temps get colder in the winter, there’s less moisture in the air, despite our good old dry heat in the summer. 

Moisture in the air is called air water vapor. Water vapor works to conduct the charge away from you. Less water vapor means that your body can hold on to that higher charge. A higher charge means a greater discharge. So, during the winter months, static charges become more common. 

Anything below 40% relative humidity sets the stage for an electrostatic charge of energy that leaps onto another conductive object in the area. Fur instance, (pun intended there), cats conduct a solid charge. When you pet your cat, or pick them up, during these dry conditions you might notice a rippling static. This will race across their bodies acting like lightning. So if they react negatively, you can understand why. 

What can you do to reduce static?

  • Use a humidifier or room vaporizer 
  • Stay moisturized 
  • Use ionic anti-static hairbrushes 
  • Use blankets, bedding and clothing made of wool or cotton instead of polyester or silk 
  • Spray a water mist on microfleece and sherpa pet bedding 
  • DO NOT use dryer sheets on your pets.  They contain a corrosive substance that can burn their eyes and skin
