PHOENIX — Spring Training has come to an end and the Arizona Diamondbacks are now ready for the 2024 MLB season.
The team spent the last month at Salt River Fields and now makes the trek back to Chase Field. For the past several weeks, the D-backs have played outside under the beautiful sunshine and amazing temperatures. Now, the squad will return to the air-conditioned confines of Chase Field.
While the team won't be playing under open skies too often for the remainder of the year, the weather still very much impacts games.
With Opening Day Thursday, let's look back at previous home openers to see how often Mother Nature cooperates for the Diamondbacks' first home pitch of the season.
- April 6, 2023: 79° F - Record low temperatures the day before
- April 7, 2022: 94° F - Roller coaster ride in temperatures, with highs that ranged from the middle 70s to 99° F in that same month
- April 9, 2021: 94° F - Just five days earlier, Phoenix recorded a record high of 98° F.
- July 30, 2020: 118° F - Much later home opener due to COVID; record high temperature on this day
- April 5, 2019: 82° F - Three days later, valley temperatures flirted with 100° F.
- March 29, 2018: 86° F - Two days later, Phoenix recorded a record high of 92° F.
In the last five home openers, Phoenix has averaged a high temperature of 93.4° F. It's safe to say that Phoenix's temperatures start to quickly warm up for the season.
While dates for opening day vary, typically Phoenix averages high temperatures in the lower 80s late March into early April. This year, highs are expected to be in the mid-80s for the D-backs home opener.
