RECAP: Rain and snow causes Arizona road, Blue Ridge schools will be closed Tuesday

Another weather system is bringing rain and snow back into Arizona. Winter storm warnings are in place for the High Country.

PHOENIX — Like last week, another weather system moved into Arizona, bringing rain and snow along with it. We were right back in that wet weather as rain rolled into the Valley from the west!

A winter storm warning was in effect Sunday through Monday morning for elevations above 6000ft. New snowfall of 4-14” was expected with 40-50mph gusts.

Rain showers were expected to fall throughout Sunday bringing upwards of 1.5" of rain into the Valley. Isolated thunderstorms were possible until the late afternoon with gusts of up to 60 mph.

Monday:

1:30 p.m. The Blue Ridge Unified School District in the Pinetop-Lakeside area said it will cancel classes on Tuesday, Jan. 3, due to the recent snowfall.

12 p.m. State Route 238 near Maricopa has reopened after flooding caused it to close.

11 a.m. State Route 260 has reopened but State Route 64 remains closed.

8 a.m. NWS Phoenix shares ADOT traffic cameras

7:29 a.m. Bearizona is closed.

6:21 a.m. Flagstaff saw multiple inches of snow during the winter storm.

6 a.m. Flagstaff Unified School District has closed all of its schools due to weather conditions.

5:43 a.m. Rain making its way out of the Valley

5:40 a.m. ADOT has posted multiple road closures throughout the state.

Sunday:

10 p.m. A winter storm warning is in effect through Monday morning for elevations above 6000ft. New snowfall of 4-12” is expected with 40-50mph gusts.

9:30 p.m. ADOT's updated list of winter-related road closures

8:10 p.m. There is a  jackknifed semi at mp 160 (just outside Williams); crews are working to get it out of the road. Traffic is moving through the site in one lane; this, plus the winter-weather conditions, is slowing traffic. 

8 p.m. Showers and isolated storms continue to push across the region this evening. 

7:10 p.m.  Multiple roadways remain closed due to winter weather

7 p.m. Rainbows could be seen all over the Valley today!

6:40 pm - The NWS says a 117-year-old record has been broken with Sunday's rainfall in Phoenix.

5:20 p.m. - ADOT says Interstate 40 in Ash Fork is closed in both directions near State Route 89 at milepost 146.

5:15 p.m. -  Drivers should expect heavy delays in both directions on Interstate 17 due to winter weather, according to Arizona DOT.

4:40 p.m. SR 238 WB near Maricopa (mp 42): The road is closed due to flooding. There's no estimated time to reopen the road.

3:10 p.m. - Interstate 40 has been closed in both directions in Ash Fork, near milepost 146, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

3:00 p.m. - The NWS says strong showers with gusty winds and lightning are affecting parts of north Phoenix.

2:30 p.m. - The Arizona Department of Transportation reports State Route 260 eastbound four miles from Payson, at milepost 256 is closed. State Route 64 is also closed in both directions between mileposts 242-269, near Grand Canyon.

2:25 p.m. - State Route 87 north of Payson, near milepost 280, has closed in both directions due to weather conditions, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

1:50 p.m. - According to the National Weather Service, a line of storms is pushing northeast along I-10 near Buckeye. The storms have the capability to produce winds of up to 60 mph.

1:30 p.m. - The Arizona Department of Transportation is urging drivers in the Valley to use caution as rain continues to fall.

1:20 p.m. - The Arizona Department of Transportation said snowplows are clearing roads up north near Jacob Lake, Flagstaff, and on US 180 on Sunday afternoon.

1:15 p.m. - According to the NWS, on Sunday afternoon, rain will continue to transition into snow across more of the region.

11:44 a.m. - The National Weathers Service reports western Arizona is starting to see snow and urging caution as road conditions begin to deteriorate in areas of higher elevation Sunday afternoon.

10:53 a.m. - Snow has been spotted in the Bellemont area! It's been wavering between rain and snow most of the morning, but residents in the High Country can expect a full changeover by 1 p.m.

10:28 a.m. - Showers and some isolated thunderstorms will continue to work east this morning and afternoon.

9:13 a.m. - There's rain on Loop 101 and road conditions could be slick. ADOT reminds everyone to slow down, use your lights, and don't tailgate.

9:01 a.m. - The Phoenix Metro area is getting some light to moderate rain. It's not the big cold front, but a leading area of showers, NWS Phoenix said.

The real storms are coming later in the day!

8:44 a.m. - Rain in the High Country is expected to change to snow later this morning and afternoon. Keep an eye on travel conditions as icy roads are expected.

8:22 a.m. - Showers have been spotted in Central Phoenix. Grab your umbrellas, rain will be on and off all day!

7:48 a.m. - The rain is on the way but it's not here yet. Afternoon storms could see gusts of up to 60 mph. Stay weather aware, as wind that strong can cause damage!
