Wall of dust, rain reaches the Valley day after destructive monsoon storm

A wall of dust in Casa Grande tracking northwest is heading toward the Valley.

PHOENIX- One day after a destructive monsoon storm hammered the Valley, dark clouds and dust appeared in the southeastern part of the county threatening another big one.

Dust kicked up Tuesday afternoon near Casa Grande while it rained further south. The wall of dust was tracking northwest.

Just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service warned travelers near Casa Grande that visibilities are dropping.

Meanwhile down south, rain caused a train to derail between Twin Peaks and Ara Valley, according to Northwest Fire District in Tucson.

The dust threat shifted to rain and the East Valley, specifically Chandler and Tempe, experienced torrential rain.

Rain across the Valley started to let up just before 6 p.m.

5:47 p.m.

It looks like activity is dying down in the Valley. Meteorologist Lindsay Riley says there is no severe weather threat to the Valley.

The 12 News radar says the southern parts of the county will be getting the bulk of the rain, but the Valley will receive scattered showers throughout the evening.

Most of the parts of the state will dry up between 9 and 10 p.m. but overnight showers over the Valley are expected.

5:40 p.m.

The dust storm has mostly cleared up but rain is still heading northwest. Downtown Phoenix got a quick shower as the storm made its way west.

ADOT tweeted photos from I-10 at El Mirage and Avondale where the rain is pouring on commuters.

5:25 p.m.

The thunderstorm has reached Estrella Mountain Park. It will continue to move northwest, NWS says.

5:21 p.m.

NWS says a strong thunderstorm will affect Phoenix, Glendale, Laveen, including Sky Harbor International Airport area. Experts says we should expect wind gusts of 50 mph and heavy rainfall once it hits.

NWS is also predicting Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler Gilbert, Tempe, Sun Lakes, including, Arizona State Grounds, South Mountain Park and Sky Harbor could experience flooding.

5:13 p.m.

Winds have picked up in Phoenix.

4:59 p.m.

The storm is approaching Phoenix.

4:55 p.m.

The East Valley is getting showers. NWS says a strong storm is hitting Tempe and producing wind gusts up to 50 mph, torrential rainfall, and frequent lightning.

4:40 p.m.

The wall of dust has reached Chandler. It continues to track northwest. NWS is warning people that the storm could bring wind gusts could reach a speed of 50 mph.
