There will be a 12News Weather Impact Alert Thursday as storms are expected later in the afternoon/evening.

PHOENIX — A 12News Weather Impact Alert is in place for Wednesday and Thursday afternoon with storms expected to rumble through the Valley and northern Arizona. Temps will also cool down as a result of cloud cover and moisture overhead.

These monsoon storms could bring strong wind, hail and flooding, so don't be afraid to dust off that old umbrella in your closet!

WHEN IT'S HAPPENING:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 21 and Thursday, Aug. 22 are partial Weather Impact Alert days. Storms are expected to start around 3 p.m.
  • Thunderstorms are expected to start near Tucson and Casa Grande and move northwest towards the Valley.
  • A flash flood watch has been issued for areas of northern Arizona until 11 p.m. Thursday.

IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE:

The National Weather Service says that any developing thunderstorms could result in localized heavy rainfall, strong winds and patches of blowing dust.

Coverage is at least 30% for measurable rainfall in the Valley. 70% for higher elevations.

This is a sizeable monsoon event for the northern and eastern portions of the state. Temps will be down across the state.

NEED TO KNOW:

If you're caught in rain or dust while on the roadway, slow down or pull off to the side of the road if needed. Slow down on wet pavement and don't drive into flooded roads or washes.

The National Weather Service gives the following advice on what to do during severe weather:

  • At Your House: Go to your secure location if you hear a severe thunderstorm warning. Damaging wind or large hail may be approaching. Take your pets with you if time allows.
  • At Your Workplace or School: Stay away from windows if you are in a severe thunderstorm warning and damaging wind or large hail is approaching. Do not go to large open rooms such as cafeterias, gymnasiums or auditoriums.
  • Outside: Go inside a sturdy building immediately if severe thunderstorms are approaching. Sheds and storage facilities are not safe. Taking shelter under a tree can be deadly. The tree may fall on you. Standing under a tree also put you at a greater risk of getting struck by lightning.
  • In a Vehicle: Being in a vehicle during severe thunderstorms is safer than being outside; however, drive to closest secure shelter if there is sufficient time.
