Thousands lose power as storm rolls through the East Valley

The National Weather Service issued a significant weather advisory for all of Maricopa County that lasts through 9:45 p.m.

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. — Thousands of people lost power Tuesday night as a storm system rolled through the East Valley.

As of 9 p.m., SRP is reporting about 4,600 people without power near Apache Junction. The company cited storm activity as the cause of the outage and power is expected to return around midnight.

Although SRP reported just 300 people without power in the area as of 9:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a significant weather advisory for all of Maricopa County that lasts through 9:45 p.m., and a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Scottsdale and Paradise Valley until 9:15 p.m.

Tuesday marks the beginning of the monsoon and near-record-breaking heat. Phoenix recorded a high of 115 degrees – matching a high set in 1974.

The heat will continue throughout the week with highs in the forecast expected to be well over 110 degrees.
