PHOENIX — The Valley is home to some of the best weather in the nation, but sometimes the weather can trigger health issues. Clearly heat is the biggest issue for us desert dwellers, but courtesy of temperamental winds, you may be currently struggling with your sinuses.
Sudden changes in weather conditions, like temperature and humidity, can cause tissues in your nose to swell, potentially increasing sinus pressure and discomfort. Right now we have a cold front passing through that is kicking up the wind. This cold front is very dry as well, which makes for added sinus issues. Experts recommend using a humidifier or vaporizer to ease symptoms. Be sure to stay hydrated as well.
We’re also dealing with heightened dust and dander in the air, which is another mortal enemy for your sinuses. Dust from inside your home and the outdoors can contain pet hair and dander, mold spores, and dust mites. All of those can trigger allergy symptoms.
Try to vacuum at least once a week with a vacuum that contains a HEPA filter to cut down on indoor dust and dander. Dusting with a microfiber cloth will help remove dust rather than push it around. Keep your windows closed on windy days, despite wanting that fresh air in. (Your sinuses will thank me later.)
Cold and dry weather can also irritate the airways, causing an increased risk of asthma symptoms. A humidifier can help here as well, along with trying to breathe through your nose outdoors in colder conditions.
