Rosa rain broke a lot of Phoenix weather records Tuesday

From Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, Rosa rain totaled 2.75 inches which is more than Phoenix received during the entire monsoon season, 2.56 inches.

PHOENIX — Tuesday became one of the wettest days in Phoenix's history thanks to rain from Tropical Depression Rosa, and it all happened pretty fast.

Just before 8 a.m. Tuesday, the rainfall total surpassed the previous rainfall record for Oct. 2, according to the National Weather Service. The previous record of .60 inches was set in 1981 and at 7:54 a.m., 1.08 inches was recorded at Sky Harbor Airport.

But that was just the beginning.

By 9:12 a.m., the rainfall total reached 1.67 inches, making it the eighth wettest October on record on just the second day of the month, NWS said. Ten minutes later, it moved up to the seventh. Then by 9:51 a.m., it jumped to the fifth.

At 10 a.m., Tuesday became the 10th wettest day ever for Phoenix at 2.13 inches of rain. It moved up to the 9th wettest day ever at 12:40 p.m., measuring 2.24 inches of rain, according to NWS.

Those records were broken several times throughout the day. By 6 p.m., Tuesday was the eighth wettest day in Phoenix history, making this month the third wettest October and wettest October day ever.

Tropical Depression Rosa brought on more rain than Phoenix has seen in a long time. From Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, Rosa rain totaled 2.75 inches which is more than Phoenix received during the entire monsoon season, 2.56 inches. The storm caused numerous Valley road closures due to flooding.

Rain is expected to continue throughout the night and moderate to heavy showers are expected, NWS says. The remnants of Rosa will continue to impact the Valley through Wednesday.
