The May climate in Phoenix was hot and dry. Here are the numbers.

The warmest May on record occurred in 1984, with an average high temperature of 101.2 degrees and a mean temperature of 87 degrees.

PHOENIX — May 2022 in Phoenix was overall warmer than normal. The average high temperature during the month of May was 97.6 F. 

The normal high temperature when looking at the years 1991 - 2020 is 94.5 degrees. On a scale from one to 126, with 126 as the coldest, May 2022 ranks eleventh with the warmest average high temperature. 

The warmest May on record occurred in 1984, with an average high temperature of 101.2 degrees and a mean temperature of 87 degrees.

In terms of the mean temperature, Phoenix also ranked eleventh out of 126 as the warmest. Phoenix's mean, or average, temperature in May 2022 was 84.1 degrees. This was 2.1 degrees above the normal of 82 degrees.

In addition to above normal temperatures, May 2022 was a dry month for Phoenix. No measurable rain fell, which ranks this month as one of the driest on record. 

The normal precipitation for May is a little more than one-tenth of an inch. The wettest May on record occurred in 1930 when Phoenix received 1.31" of rain.

Historically, May is one of Phoenix's driest months of the year, so it's not too surprising no measurable rain fell. June 15 is the official start of the monsoon; this does not mean that it will rain and storm on this day, but the region will start to tap into some moisture from the south.
