How to adjust your outdoor watering schedule during Arizona summers

The weather during Arizona summers means you may need to adjust your outdoor watering schedule. Here's how.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Even though we are past the peak summer heat, you might need to adjust your outside watering habits.

City of Chandler Urban Forester Ryan McCartney and Water Conservation Program Manager Tiffany Yand show us how to water for the weather. Here are some tips to keep in mind for this time of year.

It all starts with looking at your plants and trees.

"Look at your trees. Your trees and plants will talk to you. If you start to see them stressing, you'll know you may need to add more water," McCartney said.

Yand added that watering your grass twice a week should be the max during the summer months.  Low-water-using plants, including the trees and shrubs, should be watered no more than once a week.

The thirstier trees, like citrus and non-native trees, need to be watered once a week. McCartney suggested watering about once every seven to 14 days for desert trees. If rain is expected, or if significant rain falls earlier, you can skip a day and then return to the cycle, McCartney added.

Here are some additional outside watering recommendations:

  • Water shrubs two feet deep.
  • Water-established trees three feet deep.
  • Water six to 10 inches deep for grass.

"When watering, look at the size of the tree. Look for the canopy, or the dripline -- the edge of where the stems and leaves are – that's where you want to irrigate your tree," McCartney said.

On average, altering our outside water habits four times a year is recommended.

Woody mulch is an excellent water-saving technique. Spreading mulch around the base of the trunk of the tree will prevent moisture evaporation. Smart irrigation systems will also help conserve water, while conveniently controlling the frequency and times of watering.

Experts say you can adjust your outside watering schedules again during the fall, or when temperatures consistently fall below 100 degrees.
