Monsoon lightning sets night alight as bystander jumps into action

First responders were busy across the Valley because of fallout from the storm.

GILBERT, Ariz. — Monsoon storms rolled through the Valley Saturday night, whipping wind, knocking down power lines and lighting fires.

Brick Allen was driving down Elliot Road when he saw a flash of lightning and almost simultaneously, a clash of thunder.

“It was that close that powerful and intense,” Allen said.

Allen could feel the vibrations reverberate through his car as he drove until he saw something that stopped him in his tracks.

“The fires just engulfed. I stopped I stopped in the middle of the street to see what was going on," Allen said.

Three palm trees were set alight, struck by lightning from the monsoon. The trees burning just yards away from nearby homes and cars, Allen decided to pull over to help out.

Allen knocked on the doors of the homes getting folks out. He grabbed a hose to wet the ground around the houses, to try and contain the fire.

Five minutes later, firefighters and other first responders arrived to put out the blaze.

In the end, it was just three charred trees, all thanks to the efforts of first responders, and a little help from someone just driving by.

“Every kid wants to be a firefighter, and I got to be one for a day. It was awesome,” Allen said.
