Seniors suffering as monsoon power outage drags on in Pinal County

Several heat relief stations have been set up with some handing out water, ice, and dry ice to residents.

ELOY, Ariz. — Some people across Arizona are still feeling the brunt of our monsoon weekend storms.

Those living in Eloy and Arizona City going without power now for the fourth day. It's no secret our triple-digit temperatures aren't helping those without A/C this time of year.

Pinal County issued a state of emergency at a meeting Tuesday afternoon to address the outages and the storm damage left behind.

Several heat-relief stations have been set up with employees from APS handing out water, ice, and dry ice to lend some relief as crews work around the clock to restore power.

Many of the older adults living in the affected area were brought to Toltec Elementary School where the power is supplied by a different company.

A lot of locals were in good spirits as they picked up supplies and several stations around the area.

"It's 89 degrees in my house right now, I keep spraying my dogs down to keep them nice and cold," one resident said.

Strong monsoon storms knocked out power Sunday night in Arizona City and parts of Eloy. Mike Cruz with Pinal County stepped in to do door-to-door checks.

"This particular area of Arizona City has a lot of senior citizens who are homebound," Cruz said. "They don't have transportation or family here. They're calling us needing water, ice, and basic necessities to help beat the heat and stay hydrated."

He added that many of those seniors without power were brought to Toltec Elementary for temporary relief as APS crews continue to fix the outage.

"One of the worst storms we've ever seen, we're happy to be restoring the power now for the folks out here and providing a little relief while we can," Jim Bloom with APS said.

APS representatives say the power is estimated to be restored by 8 p.m. Tuesday. If that's not the case, they will be back out Wednesday handing out ice to those who live in the area.
