Snow makes its way to northern Arizona; rain in the Valley from recent storm

Throughout Thursday and Friday, Flagstaff is expected to get some winter weather for the first time this season.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Snow is on its way to northern Arizona! 

The National Weather Service has predicted rain and snow throughout Thursday and Friday for Flagstaff. Experts are advising travelers to prepare for the flurries. 

If you're staying in the Valley, there is a chance for rain on Thursday and in the overnight hours.

9:55 p.m. Showers will continue to move east through the Valley through 11:30 p.m. An additional tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain is possible across portions of the East Valley. 

8:40 p.m. Snow plows are making the rounds on US 180 near Snowbowl!

8:35 p.m. Isolated showers are redeveloping across the West Valley and will remain possible across the Phoenix Metro area this evening.

8:05 p.m. Starting to see some measurable rainfall in Phoenix!

7:45 p.m. Flagstaff is starting to get some snow!

6:50 p.m. Light to moderate rainfall will continue to develop across the Valley over the next few hours.

5:10 p.m. Isolated showers will continue to develop over the Valley. Meteorologists say to expect moderate rain and thunder throughout the night and into Friday morning.

4:50 p.m. Thursday, rain and snow showers are spreading from west to east across Arizona, according to the National Weather Service. The snow level ranges from  7,500-8,500 feet but will lower through the night.

The High Country will see rain turning over to snow above 6000 feet, so road conditions will be a big concern for much of Thursday into Friday morning. 

Snowfall forecasts have remained fairly consistent with 2 to 5 inches above 6000 feet; the heaviest snowfall is expected on the Kaibab Plateau with totals of 2 to 10 inches possible. 

The Flagstaff area may end up with 2 to 4 inches; snowfall accumulations will be affected by the timing of rain turning over to snow. The slopes of Snow Bowl and Sunrise will benefit the most from this next winter storm. 

There will be accumulations of a few inches along the higher elevations of Rim Country and in the Chuska Mountains of northeast Arizona.

Driving Safety Tips:

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) offers driving tips to help keep people safe on the road. 

"There’s always room for improvement when it comes to road safety," the department said on its website. 

ADOT's suggestions include: 

  • Don’t speed or drive aggressively 

  • Never drive while under the influence of substances 

  • Avoid distractions while driving 

  • Wear your seatbelt and make sure all passengers are doing the same 

  • When an emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, move over 

  • Stay extra aware in work zones 

  • Be prepared for weather conditions that make driving dangerous
