PHOENIX — June 1 marks the official start of hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin. On the first day of the 2022 season, meteorologists are monitoring two disturbances.
Agatha's remnants are creating a large area of disturbed weather near the Yucatan Peninsula and southeastern Gulf of Mexico. A broad area of showers and thunderstorms could gradually organize the remaining week.
Regardless of how further development pans out, locally heavy rainfall will be likely across portions of southeast Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, and Belize during the next couple of days; heavy rainfall will then spread into western Cuba, southern Florida, and the Florida Keys on Friday and Saturday.
The second area meteorologists are watching closely is northeast of the Bahamas. Pieces of energy at the surface and aloft are leading to disorganized showers. Surface pressures are high in this area, so significant development appears unlikely as of Wednesday morning, June 1. This disturbance is forecast to move east-northeastward away from the United States.
Unfortunately, these disturbances will not bring moisture to Arizona. Monsoon 2022 officially starts on June 15.
Hurricane season will run until Nov. 30. The long-term averages for the number of named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes are 14, 7, and 3.
