PHOENIX — More than 600 heat-related deaths occurred in Maricopa County last year, which is more than a 700% increase from a decade ago.
A new report released by Maricopa County confirms the Valley experienced its deadliest year for heat on record in 2023. The 645 heat-related deaths occurred during one of the Valley's hottest seasons, when the National Weather Service issued several excessive heat warnings for the Phoenix area.
About half of the county's heat deaths in 2023 were reported in Phoenix zip codes. Mesa reported 51 deaths, Glendale reported 35 and Scottsdale reported 25.
About 78% of heat deaths were among males. The most prevalent age group consisted of people between 50 and 64.
The county's report shows about 75% of the Valley's heat deaths occurred outdoors. About 85% of the county's indoor heat deaths were in residences that had a non-functioning air conditioner.
"Individuals experiencing homelessness make up the largest proportion of heat-related deaths in 2023," the report states.
While the living circumstances of some of the deceased was unknown, at least 45% of the people who died last year were experiencing homelessness.
In preparation for the upcoming summer season, the county is taking steps to expand access to cooling centers and will be putting up signs to better advertise the locations of these heat relief centers.
Information on where to find cooling centers in the Valley can be found here.
