Phoenix sees hottest June in over 100 years

According to the National Weather Service, Phoenix had the hottest June in more than 100 years.

PHOENIX — Most people can agree: June was a hot one in Phoenix. But the National Weather Service said it wasn't just hot. Last month was record-breaking hot.

Phoenix recorded the hottest June in recorded history last month. The average temperature was 97 degrees, 1.7 degrees hotter than the runner up hottest June 2021.

Records for Phoenix date back to 1895, meaning this year's hottest June is the hottest in more than 100 years.

Austin Jamison a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix said Phoenix experienced 14 days of 110 degrees or more in June.

“That is pretty significant," Jamison said.

A combination of strong, consistent high pressure systems and Phoenix being surrounded by sky scrapers and concrete Jamison said is what led to the above average temperatures.

"We're still ramping up," he said.

The NWS Phoenix is also predicting July will see above average temperatures with Monsoon storms bringing little relief. Jamison also said they are expecting lower than average rain chances for July.

Here are the top contenders for the hottest June on record:

  • 2024, average temperature: 97.0 degrees
  • 2021, average temperature: 95.3 degrees
  • 2013, average temperature: 94.8 degrees
  • 2016, average temperature: 94.8 degrees
  • 2017, average temperature, 94.7 degrees
