What's the difference between 'breezy' and 'windy?'

It turns out the National Weather Service has specific criteria to describe wind.

PHOENIX — Winds are a big factor in Arizona. You often hear the terms "breezy" or "windy" in the forecast. While it sounds like these terms can be used interchangeably, there is actually a difference.

It turns out the National Weather Service has specific criteria to describe wind.

If winds are expected to be calm or less than 5 mph, the National Weather Service will add "light wind" or "light and variable wind" to their forecast.

Once sustained winds reach 15-25 mph, you'll hear the term "breezy" in warmer months of the year, or "brisk" or "blustery" when it's cold outside.

When sustained winds reach the 20-30 mph range, that's officially considered "windy."

If a wind storm is predicted or occurring and forecasted speeds reach 40 mph or greater, forecasters use "strong," "dangerous," or "high wind." If winds are above High Wind Warning criteria of 58 mph gusts, you'll see the term, "damaging."

During hurricanes, you'll see and hear the phrase, "hurricane conditions expected."
