Valley of the Too Much Sun? NWS predicts warmer, drier winter this year.

La Niña conditions are expected later this fall, which could lead to drought conditions across much of the state.

PHOENIX — Bad news Arizona, this upcoming winter probably isn't going to do much to break our dry streak.

The National Weather Service recently released their statewide outlook for the winter season. Unfortunately, it's likely going to be warmer and drier than normal this year.

There is a 60% chance for La Niña conditions to develop later this fall, NWS predicts. This weather pattern typically pushes storms farther norther, leaving much of the southern United States with less moisture.

"As a result of this outlook, drought conditions are expected to develop or worsen across the Southwest. Additional impacts from a possible drier-than-normal winter include reductions in water supply and an earlier start to the Spring wildfire season," NWS officials said.

Right now, NWS expects a 35-60% chance of below-normal precipitation and a 40-60% chance of above-normal temperatures.

"Even with below-normal precipitation in the forecast this winter, it only takes one significant winter storm to result in a high-impact event," they said.
