Arizona ski areas get pounded with snow just in time for Christmas

On Thursday night, the state's ski areas got much-needed dumping of snow.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Snow has been falling in the Arizona High Country since Thursday night and it's welcome news for the state's two ski areas.

At Sunrise Ski Park near Show Low, mountain officials are planning on opening more terrain on Christmas Day thanks to the snow they've had.

"I would say 9 to 10 inches so far," Ethan Ramsey with Sunrise Ski Park said. "Today we're looking at 16 through the evening."

The Sunrise webcam showed high wind and heavy snow, but Ramsey said the snow should help attract more people.

It's been a tough winter for Arizona's ski areas. La Nina has brought a warmer and drier winter to Arizona and while most people may enjoy the mild weather, ski areas rely on the snow and cold for business.

"It's been a real issue up here," Ramsey said. "A couple days ago there was a lot of grass showing and there's not anymore."

In Flagstaff, Arizona Snowbowl got 11 inches of snow overnight and also plans to open up more terrain.

"It's wonderful as far as snowfall goes," Marketing Manager Kyle Sawatzke said. "It helps to accelerate the process for our snowmaking team."
