RECAP: Winter storm updates: I-40 eastbound reopens, other highways still closed

On Thursday, skies will clear up, but we’ll keep the cold around through the end of the workweek.

ARIZONA, USA — Yet another winter storm has made it to Arizona, bringing snow and high winds to the Flagstaff area and rain to the Valley.

Highway closures

The Arizona Department of Transportation said the following highways are closed due to weather:

  • US 180 north of Snowbowl (MP 236-248)  
  • US 191 in both directions south of Alpine (MP 188-253)  
  • SR 260 in both directions from east of Camp Verde to SR 87 (MP 229-251)   
  • SR 89A in both directions between Sedona and Flagstaff (MP 375-398)   
  • SR 87 in both directions between Winslow and north of State Route 260 (MP 325-278) 
  • SR 64 near the Grand Canyon National Park East Entrance (MP 244-261)  
  • SR 366 near Mt. Graham in both directions (MP 131-137)

Other closures and delays

Peach Springs School District School is canceled Wednesday, March 1 for all K-12. This includes the elementary, Music Mountain Jr./Sr. High School and district offices.

City of Flagstaff: Administrative offices and non-essential facilities will be closed Wednesday, March 1.

Flagstaff Unified School District: All classes are canceled on Wednesday, March 1.

Northern Arizona UniversityAll in-person classes have been canceled for the Flagstaff Mountain, Yavapai and Show Low campuses on Wednesday, March 1.

All Blue Ridge schools will be closed Thursday

Wednesday:

10:15 p.m. Arizona kicked off the month of March with yet another winter storm bringing snow to the High Country and rain to the Valley.

8:45 p.m SR 238 is CLOSED from milepost 40 near Maricopa to Gila Bend. The closure is due to flooding.

8:40 p.m Good news on the power outages front. 

SRP now reporting less than 50 customers without power. APS is reporting approximately 625 customers without power. 

8:30 p.m. The east Valley still has a couple more hours to go of moderate to heavy rain 

8 p.m. POWER OUTAGES

According to SRP, approximately 3,300 customers are without power at this time. To check your neighborhood, click here.

7:10 p.m. ADOT snowplows are out in the Flagstaff area.

7 p.m. Torrential rain, cloud-to-ground lightning, small hail and gusts from 40-45 mph will be possible as this line of thunderstorms cross the Valley.

5:30 p.m.: ADOT has updated its list of highway closures throughout the state.

3:45 p.m. Just a reminder, if you're driving in central or southern Arizona, roads may be slippery. Be careful out there!



3:40 p.m. A few snow and rain showers will linger across the eastern half of the state early Thursday, but by Thursday afternoon, we'll all break out into some sunshine.  

3 p.m.: Arizona state troopers are strongly discouraging people from attempting to drive through hazardous areas during the winter storm.

2 p.m.: The National Weather Service says to get ready for more rain and snow this afternoon.

12:45 p.m.: Intense snowfall is expected this afternoon and evening in northern Arizona.

10:15 a.m.: Multiple roadways closed due to weather conditions.

8:45 a.m.: Snow continues to fall throughout the High Country.

5:58 a.m.: ADOT advises against traveling in "extreme weather conditions."

4:15 a.m.: Blowing and drifting snow causing hazardous conditions in the northern half of the state.

2 a.m.: Snow showers began to pelt the Flagstaff area early Wednesday.

Tuesday:

10:25 p.m.: Everyone is loving the extra layers of powder - particularly in Flagstaff!

9:10 p.m. With a major winter storm coming to northern Arizona, preparation is key to staying safe.

 

6:45 p.m. ADOT is urging drivers to be in the know when it comes to driving in winter weather.

5:30 p.m. The snow is coming down in Flagstaff.

5:00 p.m. The drive home on Wednesday will tough across Arizona with rain  across the lower deserts and snow across the high country.

1:55 p.m.  ADOT is urging everyone to delay travel if possible.

1:45 pm.  A Wind Advisory has been issued for Feb. 28.

4:35 a.m.  NWS Flagstaff said a major winter storm will affect the area Tuesday through Thursday.
