PHOENIX — A Southwest Airlines flight from Phoenix to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, was delayed Thursday after passengers saw one of the engines smoking while the plane sat on the tarmac.
John Fagundes recorded video showing heavy smoke pouring out of the plane's engine. other passengers called out to warn the flight crew that something was wrong.
“I was thinking, 'oh we better not take off, there's got to be something wrong with this,'" Fagundes said.
Fagundes said the plane went back to the gate at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Southwest crews unloaded all the passengers.
They were eventually loaded onto a new plane and continued to Mexico, he said.
"I've never seen anything like that before," Fagundes said.
The flight made it to Mexico safely, albeit two hours late.
Southwest Airlines confirmed there was a "mechanical delay" with the flight but a spokesperson did not know what was wrong with the plane.
